The Power of Thoughts

“I, Leroy Milton, will be present, enthusiastic and inspiring.”

Is something I started saying twice a day, about six months ago, habitually. This is a reassurance of my character, to keep it in my conscious thoughts everyday.

It’s called an affirmation. It has helped me strive toward this challenge, constantly focusing on the now, being increasingly excited and bold.

What are Affirmations?

The Secret originally proposed this idea. Through your thoughts and conscious attention on those thoughts, the universe grants your imagined outcomes.

Apparently, people have won the lottery, married their dream spouse and lived in their dream houses through this mystical method. So I had to try it for myself.

They worked a few times, but sometimes they failed. I couldn’t understand why. How does the universe differentiate between my requests? Is it even the universe divinely granting something? Or, maybe God?

I am increasingly skeptical of this ‘ask and you shall receive’ mentality. It doesn’t seem logical that you can ask the universe or God of anything and it is magically arranged.

However, I still do it and it has worked.

Why the skepticism?

I don’t think it is some divine power that grants your request. I think you are in complete control of your thoughts and you determine the outcome.

My constant reminder to be present has brought me back when my thoughts stray into the past or the distant future. My constant reminder to be enthusiastic has pushed me to be my best, most excited self. My constant reminder to be inspiring has allowed me to approach every situation with an inspiring message.

I feel like through my thoughts, great and powerful outcomes can come to fruition.

However, I cannot discount peoples’ thoughts on spirituality and religion. Instead, I propose this view. When you pray or ask God or the universe, I feel like your ‘desire’ is not granted. Instead, opportunities for that desire are granted.

Situations arise that help you reach your goal. You may find yourself doing a free photography job, only to have your work discovered for a huge contract. Or, a girl may randomly approach you, and it’s up to you to make a connection. These situations challenge you to act a specific way, where your outcomes may be granted.

I was put into situations where I needed to stay present, where I needed to be enthusiastic, where I needed to be inspiring. Through these situations, I slowly added more power, more feeling and more positivity to myself.

There is a lot of power in personal thoughts. Had it not be for my positive affirmations, would I have confronted these situations the same way? The affirmation allowed me to approach each situation very uniquely.

Steven wrote an article on mastering your thoughts. You can take a look at it for tips. I implore everyone to use positive thoughts, focus your energy and through them, you will approach every situation differently and obtain something great along the way.

Be bold, be free, and love on.

  1. I am very optimistic and expect things to work out. Even when it doesn’t I usually think, it’s probably for the best. It doesn’t change anything, but I’m not whining.

  2. This post is important, because our thoughts shape our perception, and as a result, our world. I like what you said about “opportunities” being presented that we might not have noticed if we hadn’t been focusing on a desired outcome. I like to add the caveat “thy will be done” when I’m focusing on a desired outcome. Sometimes life has something *much* better planned. Thank you for yet another meaningful post. 🙂

    1. Thank you very much for your kind words!

Your “Thy will be done” is very similar to something that I do. I usually say “This will happen” as a way to really confirm to myself that something will happen and to prepare for the best possible outcome.

  3. I’m naturally a very pragmatic and realistic person so to combat that I personally use a number of written affirmations daily to keep me in the right mindset. It does make a difference in my daily mood and since ones attitude is in large part what determines someone’s success why not give yourself every edge you can! I’m all for it!

    1. That’s great to hear! I used to do the written affirmations for a little bit. It was incredibly effective seeing them on written piece of paper.

Also, I use the affirmations to bring me back when my mind wanders. Helps me refocus my mental attitude. For that reason, I prefer spoken ones more, because pens are a scarce resource!
Thank you for your comment! 🙂

  4. I think that a “constant reminder” is a crucial part of becoming successful in anything.

As you wrote, it focusses your mind on something that does exist. It prevents distraction from “nonexisting realities”, like past or future.

The use of constant reminders leads to a “one step at a time” mentality, which is a powerful weapon against procrastination.

    1. You summarized my article very well! You’re right. A constant reminder is something incredibly helpful. I think, anything that brings focus back to your task at hand, should be utilized frequently.

  5. Thank you for this article! I have found affirmations to be extremely important, especially recently as I go through some major life changes. I don’t really make requests of the universe, but I do have some things I want to see from myself. My personal favorite mantra is “Be decent and fearless.” It is encouraging and forgiving at the same time.

  6. I have always thought of affirmations as a sort of mix between the “cum hoc ergo propter hoc” fallacy (the idea that correlation implies causation) and placebo effect. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing! The placebo effect is very useful. I like the way you’ve outlined affirmations here, it makes me think of them a bit more positively. Mind and body are strongly connected, most people forget this.

    Great post, Leroy!

    1. The placebo effect, I think, is a great think. For me, I think it stems from thoughts. You are your thoughts. Personally, when I don’t of myself of unworthy, upset, or angry, everything around my immediate self, manifests those outcomes. See, I’m still incredibly skeptical of affirmations. I don’t quite believe in anything, but at the same time, I don’t want to believe that there isn’t anything.

The universe is too expansive to discredit anything effectively. That being said, for now, I believe in myself. I believe that what I think, will have a greater degree on my own self, than any other factor in my current.

Rayven, it’s a always a pleasure to see your comments! I hope you’re doing wonderful. 🙂

  7. I am an Indian, Hindu by religion. I do agree thoughts have some power of their own. But more strongly do i believe in the concept of karma ( not just because i am a Hindu). This is because things are happening in this universe without people thinking about it. Nobody’s thoughts control them So i think, it is our karma that is taking us places.

    1. That’s an interesting take on it. I, too, believe in karma. I believe that if you’re a good person, good things will come. But part of being a good person encompasses a positive mental attitude. To me, a person who thinks negatively cannot help the world in a positive way.

I think aligning your thoughts a certain way produces good karma!

  8. I actually did a research paper last semester titled “Power of a Positive Mind”
It’s such important knowledge many people choose to ignore, and end up throwing away so many great opportunities among other things.

    1. It’s true! I think everything stems from your mindset. The people are happy and successful are the ones that believe they are happy and successful. Equally so, many body builders speak of the mind to muscle connection. I know there is a lot of validity to it!

      Thanks for your comment! 🙂

  9. Thank you for following my blog!
My blog is a little ….. “BLUNT” in some of my “rants” but my message is consistent and sincere.
Anyway, the topic in this post is essentially similar to the message I want to get across and also drove me to pursue my Phd in psychology (WHICH I FEEL THE CURRICULUM NEEDS TO BE REVISED)
WELL, don’t worry…. I’m not going to apply anything that psychology has tried to teach me..
It is my understanding and belief that we can control one thing in our life, and that is our perception of thought. We can either let thoughts dictate the way they are interpreted and perceived, or you can choose to control the way in which you perceive them!
    What is a thought???????
A thought is something you create. I MUST REPEAT THAT! ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT A THOUGHT IS YOUR CREATION.
Whatever the “information” or “awareness” that is “presented” or “displayed” is openly and ultimately up to you to process and form the thought you create by your perception.
Heads spinning yet???? GOOD THAT MEANS THEY ARE TURNED ON LOL
A THOUGHT AND EMOTION IS SOMETHING YOU CONCEPTUALLY CREATED AND EXPERIENCE. A CONDITIONED AND TRAINED CORE BELIEF OF WHAT IS “EXPECTED” OR “ACCEPTABLE” RESPONSE TO __WHATEVER— IS GOING TO INFLUENCE YOU AND ALSO BE RESTRAINING YOU FROM FORMING YOUR OWN INTERPRETATION.

ALRIGHT- I’M TRYING TO SAY THAT IF YOU ARE UPSET, STRESSED, ANGRY, YOU ARE CREATING THAT THOUGHT, REGARDLESS OF WHAT INITIATED THAT RESPONSE ….. ITS UP TO YOU TO REALIZE ANY FURTHER EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE IS YOUR CREATION.

IT’S NOT EASY AND TAKES A LOT OF PRACTICE, BUT START QUESTIONING WHY YOU FEEL THE WAY YOU DO, IT MIGHT SEEM CLEAR, BUT USUALLY ITS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN CONDITIONED AND EXPECTED TO FEEL. THAN TRY AND RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS “YOU” THAT CREATES …… WHAT YOU FEEL, WHAT YOU SEE, HOW YOU EXPERIENCE THINGS…..HOW YOU INTERPRET THINGS, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, ACCEPTING YOUR OWN THOUGHTS REGARDLESS OF “THE EXPECTED”

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CONTROL YOUR OWN THOUGHTS, HOPEFULLY YOU WON’T LET A COLLECTIVELY ACCEPTED AND EXPECTED BELIEF OR UNDERSTANDING IMPRISON YOU IN IT.
THIS IS YOUR MIND AND PERCEPTIONAL REALITY TO CREATE, CONTROL AND EXPERIENCE, NOT ANYONE ELSE TO DICTATE.

YOU GET TO LIVE THE LIFE AND REALITY YOU CHOSE THROUGH THOUGHTS YOU CREATE SO HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!!!

OK IM DONE LOL SORRY FOR LONG POST ….

    1. First of all, I would like to agree with you. I’m in a first year Psychology course and I find the content painstakingly horrible. Maybe, I haven’t progressed enough into the course to understand completely, but it seems that it is riddled with inaccuracies and double-thoughts.

Secondly, you are completely right will those statements. Thoughts are under your own conscious control. But most people allow them to work unconsciously. Secondly, once that negative thought does occur, it it up to the person to step back and objectively analyze it from all angles. However, easier said than done. The process can be hard because most people are busy worrying about worry, worrying about their anger, and worrying about when to feed their kids and dog.

I find that meditation really helps this practice of controlling your thoughts. I used to do it as part of my daily and practice and stopped. I only recently implemented it again, and I have benefited greatly over the past few days. I recommend trying it, if you haven’t already!

Thank you for your long and thought-provoking comment! I don’t often get these long ones, and I really appreciate the time and effort you put into it!

  10. Thank you for being open to my concepts and thoughts… It is important for everyone to realize that when these concepts are presented, they are not to represent a position of being correct, only a concept that can be of inquisitive in value.
You have made a very important association and application to my comment being “thought-provoking” .
That is something we all should never neglect to do! We should always be open to new thoughts, question new thoughts, and be open to discuss new thoughts.
It’s not about being right, (I do not think there is such a thing)
It can only be through a cooperation of individual thoughts being shared that will result in the individual concluding a more educated belief for themselves.

As far as your psychology classes and education- Keep going, but do so with an open mind beyond “set” theory that is being taught. There is a lot of valuable information in the courses. You don’t have to agree with them (since they don’t all agree anyway) ……

Again…. Thank you, Hope more people start to freely and without fear discuss their thoughts. No one should ever feel that their thoughts will be judged! Thoughts are NEEDED!
