Reduce Your Negativity in 4 Ways

Back in March, I started this site as a producer of positivity and hope for the masses. That goal is still incredibly strong inside me. I feel the burning urge to help people.

I feel compelled to help people through my stories and experiences. Everyday, I wake up and check my statistics for the site. I am delighted that people are reading and commenting and enjoying this site. Thank you, by the way.

I am more than content to help people, in whatever small way possible. That being said, I aim to be a ray of positivity in peoples’ lives.

There is so much negativity in the world. It seems as if people are drawn to it. The more they hear about it, the more they want to participate in it.

People surround themselves with negativity through their everyday lives. And for those who do not surround themselves with it, negativity seems to seek them out.

A) FAMILY and FRIENDS

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have many positive and loving people in my life. These people have molded the man you are reading about today.

But, these people weren’t always there. I had to go through an intense sifting process to filter out the toxic people in life.

I suggest doing the same. Pessimistic people continue to suck the soul from your body. They want to complain, gossip, hate, negative-ate (a patented Leroy word) all their feelings on you.

You don’t need all that in your life. Cut them.

B) TELEVISION

I BARELY watch television these days. This is partially due to the lack of time, but also because there isn’t anything to watch.

There are so few good (by ‘good,’ I mean positive) shows out there. The majority of them are crime dramas and news.

When I was growing up, there were shows like Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Wholesome television shows with positive messages about family, love, and friendship. Now the biggest shows are about jealousy, backstabbing and meth.

When did we turn towards the dark-side? While these shows are ‘entertaining,’ negative messages are propagated. Through cinematography we consume so much negativity and hate.

C) THE NEWS

This is somewhat similar to television, except for the fact that the news is literally EVERYWHERE. It’s hard to escape it. I never ever watch or read the news.

This is not due to ignorance. Under qualified, stupid reporters that spread negativity reports the news. There is never anything positive on the news. No heroic stories? No Jimmy opening up a lemonade stand? No nothing.

“But how will you fit in?”

A new friend told me in high society, people would look down on you if you don’t know current events. While that may be true, I don’t really care.

My main question is “why?” To fit into some negativity small-talk box? To surround myself with all the negative people, I’ve spent the majority of life avoiding?

Personally, I find it a waste of time.

D) SOCIAL MEDIA

Cyber-bullying is all the rage these days. It is a huge problem. Back in my day (am I really that old?), kids just called me fat and pushed me around. It hurt, a lot. But I got over it.

There is a key difference between my childhood bullying and modern bullying. My bullying was unavoidable. I had to go to school everyday. Social media isn’t necessary. Delete it, you don’t need it.

Similarly, negativity is found in literally all over the Internet. YouTube trolls, Facebook arguments, and Twitter ‘beefs.’ Do not subscribe to these forms of avoidable negativity.

Use these ‘tools’ but do not get consumed by them.

SOLUTION?

Use the word ‘No’ more often. There is great power in that word. Take control of your life. Opt for ‘No’ to anything and anyone you do not want in your life.

NO

Say ‘no’ to mindless meetings, negative people, social media ‘beefs,’ anger, and regret. Mindless television and news. Say no to all the negativity in your life. The moment you do so, you’ll notice an incredible change.

Life will be simpler, almost serene.

“When you have a tiny piece of shit in the soup, it doesn’t matter how much more water you pour in and how many more spices you put on top. There’s shit in the soup.” – James Altucher

Say ‘no’ when people try to place a little piece of shit in your soup.

Be bold, be free, and love on.

  1. I totally agree with this. It’s hard to avoid negativity. It seems to be everywhere, but you have to actively seek out positive things. That’s why I prefer reading books instead of watching tv.

    1. Yeah. You really have to put the effort into being positive. There’s a world of negativity out there. But at the same time, there is a world of positivity buried under. You just have to find it. Books > TV any day, in my opinion!

  2. “Social media” is absolutely true – that’s why I’ve ditched them now. Some ppl call me “anti-social” but hey, at least I’ve earned my inner tranquillity.

    1. Social media is one of the major negativity outlets. I still have social media, but I choose to avoid the negativity. Do not subscribe to fb arguments and twitter beefs. These things destroy your inner tranquility.

For me, I need the social media to spread this message. But if you can avoid it altogether, that is definitely the way to go!

      Thanks, D.A. 😀

  3. Hi there, what a great post! Agree with what you have stated about social media, although it seems ironic when we’re on WP, but even WP can become a negative thing and all consuming if you let it. I actually cut my ties with FB nearly a year ago, and feel happier for it. Thanks for dropping by my blog and following me, I appreciate your support. I look forward to reading more of your blog, as I hope you will mine also. Keep up the positivity, Bex

    1. You’re right. But the central point is that THERE IS negativity everywhere. It is hard to escape that monster. But you take certain steps to reduce your intake of negativity. As you said, FB is a huge supporter of negativity and negative feelings. Cutting that out, in itself, it a huge relief, in my opinion.

I find that I don’t experience any negativity through WP. I find that the community is incredibly supportive and loving. That being said, it is one of the major reasons, I picked this site to blog over the other hosting sites. The community is amazing here.

Likewise, thank you very much for supporting myself as well. I really do enjoy your straight forward writing style! Lastly, thank your insightful comment! 🙂

      1. Of course, I do agree with that. I do feel that wherever there are people there will be negativity. I also think eradicating all negativity is near impossible, as many situations lead to negative thoughts, emotions and reactions. I think the important thing is to not let that negativity define you, and drag you down into the mire forever.

WP in general is pretty much OK, I have had a couple of negative experiences, but otherwise I feel the community I have become a part of are good people. However, I don’t really have experience with other blogging platforms, so I can’t comment on them.

My pleasure, I do like to attract positivity into my life. In fact I am actually a member of a ‘Positive Thinking’ group. Thank you, I appreciate that. I like to gain feedback from my readers and know what they think about what I write.

        Take care,
        Bex 🙂

  4. Excellent points on four things that greatly affect our lives. Family is a tough issue. We can decide whether to forgive and forget. It has taken me a while to forgive those closest to me, but once I did, I felt better. It was a lesson in being surrounded with the right type of people – those who are immensely strong, challenging and who are going to push you forward.

    1. It does take a while to forgive, but as you said, you DO feel significantly better. That is unnecessary pressure that can be easily solved.

I find that forgiveness is good in more then one sense. It is good to be close to your family, but I think the added benefit of relieving unnecessary stress/negativity is a better outcome, imo.

Surrounding yourself with the right type of people in the end is the best solution. Keeping negativity away is a hard task to start, but once you get the ball rolling, it is easy to continue.

Thank you so much for the comment! 🙂

  5. Fantastic, I will remember “just say NO to shit in the soup” so lovely to read about positivity & it’s ok to say NO.
I regularly cut the cords of negative people/situations before I sleep at night

Lovely to read thank you 🙏

    1. That’s good. Most people cling on negative people, which in turn brings them down. I’m glad to see that you can (and have) progressed. I’m also incredibly happy that you enjoyed it. There will be lots more positivity in the near future!

Thank you so much for the comment.
      Kind regards,

  6. Fabulous piece of work Leroy. The analogy of shit in the soup is great! Negativity has it’s way of squirming into our life through invasive pummeling of vibes we work hard to ignore. It tries hard to squash the joy of positive exuberance! My last diagnosis learning I have developed epilepsy secondary to the wonderful experience of brain surgery dropped me into, what a close friend said to me, a shit storm. I let it happen then by using the positive energy of beautiful life, I kicked its ass.

    1. That’s great news to hear! You are right. Negative energy is literally everywhere. That being said, it is incredibly easy to avoid if you just cut out all the sources from the root! Positive energy has been linked to all kinds of wonderful effects.

I’ve read articles of people curing themselves from life-threatening diseases through just laughter! I’m glad you kicked it’s ass! Just remember to stay positive everyday and smile!
